Description
Summary:An overview on PO res in Poland on the press, TV, & documentary films. 2 types of studies are examined in particular: (a) investigation of the structures & strata of readers of the periodical press; (b) res into preferences in periodical reading in terms of contents. It is found that reading of periodicals is a mass phenomenon in post-war Poland. A daily paper is read everyday by about 90% of the adult pop of the big cities (Lodz, Katowice, Cracow, & Warsaw). The largest % of readers is found among persons 18-29 yrs of age, who are more likely to read several papers than older people. Men read a broader scope of dailies than women, while women read more periodicals. Older women read less. 20-25% of working women read no dailies at all, but women in professional occup's read more dailies than non-working women. Re contents, a high degree of readers' interest was found in soc & pol'al issues. 1 study indicates that 60% of newspaper readers in Warsaw believe that the information presented is true or mostly true. Readers in Ru environments expressed similar confidence in the agri'al information presented by the papers. The higher a reader's educ, the more critical he is of the MM. The confidence in the press depends to a considerable extent on the actual expectations of the reader. Polish readers demand that the press should increase the reliability of its information, increase its role in soc control, devote more articles to educ & advice in all areas of life, & should provide more intellectual entertainment, be more comprehensible & lively & less sensational. Readers feel the N of advertisements should be reduced. Future res needs in PO on the MM are outlined. M. Maxfield.
