Description
Summary:Guttman-type scales were developed on the basis of responses to questions concerning teen-age students' perceptions of 4 areas of fam life; (1) democratic management of the fam, (2) cooperation in the home, (3) fairness of discipline in the home, & (4) affection in the fam. These scales are believed to reflect the images which teen-agers have of their fam's as reference groups. Scale items were chosen after being classified into the 4 areas by 80 upper division U students, being ranked on a 5-point discrimination scale by the same group, & being ranked on acceptability by an 8th grade class in a junior HSch. Items which survived this screening process were then subjected to the usual Guttman scaling technique for a sample of 3,800 junior high & HSch students in 4 Sch districts in the state. C of R ranged from .857 to .939. Cross-classifying the fam culture-type scales with a scale of deviant behavior showed that conformity was definitely related to high ratings in 3 of the 4 areas (cooperation, fairness of discipline & affection) & was somewhat related in the 4th area of democracy.
