Summary: | Although anti-Americanism has been an integral part of Canadian history, it has not been investigated through systematic empirical research. This project analyzed the relationship existing between anti-Americanism, as measured by a scale developed for this purpose, and nationalism, political alienation, anti-French Canadian attitudes, authoritarianism, and a number of social, political, demographic and behavioral variables. The results show that one of the most significant characteristics of anti-Americanism is its consistent breakdown into two dimensions. Anti-Americanism seems to develop from both a rational (issue-oriented) and emotional (stereotyping) base. These two dimensions are, in turn, complexly related to other political attitudes and certain demographic characteristics. |
