Summary:This paper describes the process by which a group of minority community representatives became involved in decision‐making roles throughout five years of a multidisciplinary research project. Collaboration between community advocates and academic researchers has been rare but will become increasingly frequent, reflecting the changing nature of accountability in social science research. This paper reviews the goals of the interest groups involved and the processes by which conflicts were resolved. Suggestions are made for the consideration of social scientists who anticipate conducting community‐related research in the future.
