Summary: | The theory that education reduces social inequalities is proven to be inadequate, through a political economy study of the role of education. Data were collected mainly through questionnaires administered to students from 6 different schools in Delhi (N=360) in Jan, 1972. Interviews, & direct participatory & nonparticipatory observation also elicited data for consideration. The hierarcy present in school systems is delineated & related to the existence of social inequality. Factors examined include: each school's facilities, student SE backgrounds, teachers' SE backgounds, each school's public image, & each school's output--or the academic performance of the students. There is a direct r between the school system hierarchy & the social hierarchy. The education system thus appears to perpetuate social inequalities. 3 Tables. C. Grindle. |
