Description
Summary:Psychiatric treatment systems which emphasize the therapeutic efficacy of group therapy place some emphasis on the sharing of experiences among patients. In such systems therefore the identification of instances of sharing and learning how to share are matters of some concern to members. The article explores the varieties of mundane reasoning employed in a psychiatric hospital to warrant the hearing of instances as instances of sharing and some of the ways in which such claims were accountably defeated by members. Special attention is paid to the ways in which the identification and learning of sharing is tied to the knowledge and use of a variety of organizational features, such as informal conventions and the body of conventional psychiatric knowledge, and to the on-going analysis by members of the structure of talk, for example through topic analysis.
