Description
Summary:The question of econ dependency of the mother & her child upon the father of that child is explored in the context of the total position of the sexes in society. The econ dependency of mothers upon a husband is complementary to the husband's provider role & has many dysfunctional aspects, eg, it discourages free choice in love & sexual matters, makes women submissive, etc. Reference is made to the ideas of Wilhelm Reich on the interrelations of authoritarian econ-pol'al fam structure & the character structure of the individual; ie, it is postulated that patriarchal, authoritarian fam life leads to sexual repression & sexual repression is not conducive to individual fulfillment in love, work & SP life. The problems of work & SP fulfillment are not problems merely of choosing between participation either in the fam or in occup'al & pol'al life, but also--& more basically--are those of developing diff kinds of work, pol'al & fam instit's & the kinds of personalities that may be capable of developing the instit's in such diff directions. Instit's & character structure today are basically of a new brand of authoritarianism & do not allow for much self-determined, creative activity. If the relationships between fam & individual fulfillment are to be studied adequately, sociol'al approaches must be combined with "dynamic" bio-psychol'al ones, capable of grasping the presently more or less repressed creative powers of the individual.
