Description
Summary:THE PURPOSE OF THIS ARTICLE IS TO EXPLORE DISPASSIONATELY THE SOCIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF NATIONALISM IN YUGOSLAVIA. THE TITLE POINTS TO A BASIC RE-EVALUATION OF THIS PROBLEM. THEORIES OF NATIONALISM, AND NATIONALISM AS POLITICAL 'RHETORIC' AND THE FAILURE OF POLITICAL RHETORIC IN YUGOSLAVIA ARE, EACH IN TURN, EXAMINED. THE DIVERSITY OF YUGOSLAV 'NATIONALISMS' IS DETAILED. THE CONCLUSION IS THAT BY ITS FAILURE TO INSTITUTIONALISE A COMMON RHETORIC BASED UPON SOCIALISM, THE YUGOSLAV REGIME HAS KEPT ALIVE THE POSSIBILITY OF ALTERNATIVE RHETORICS.
