Description
Summary:THE 1960'S WAS MARKED BY THE RISE OF A DISSIDENT YOUTH CULTURE, BEGINNING WITH LIBERAL REFORMISM IN THE EARLY 1960'S. AS THE YOUTH CULTURE EVOLVED, IT ALTERNATED BETWEEN POLITICAL CONFRONTATION & CULTURAL INTENSIFICATION, AT EACH STAGE INCREASING THE LEVEL OF DISSIDENCE UNTIL 1968 WHEN VISIONS OF REVOLUTION WERE HELD FORTH AS THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE TO THE EXISTING SOCIETY. THOUGH CONFLICT WAS PROLONGED THROUGHOUT 1969-70, THE REVOLUTIONARY VISION HAD FADED & THE MOVEMENT HAD FRAGMENTED INTO MUTUALLY-CONTRADICTORY TENDENCIES, NONE OF WHICH, BY ITSELF, WAS CAPABLE OF ARTICULATING A UNIFIED & COMPELLING VISION. AS THE MOVEMENT FRAGMENTED, DISSIDENCE DRAINED FROM THE VARIOUS SUBCULTURES AS THEY ACCOMMODATED THEMSELVES TO THE DOMINANT SOCIETY. THE EXCEPTION TO THIS WERE THE EMBITTERED RADICALS, WHO, DURING THE EARLY '70'S WERE ISOLATED TERRORISTS. POSTMOVEMENT GROUPS AROSE, MAINTAINING FRAGMENTS OF THE VISION OF THE '60'S, YET ENFORCING ON THEIR MEMBERS BEHAVIORS OF EARLIER CULTURAL SYNDROMES & ESCHEWING POSITIONS OF CONFLICT. POSTMOVEMENT GROUPS FUNCTIONED TO KEEP ASPECTS OF THE FREAK VISION ALIVE & TO ACCOMMODATE THEIR MEMBERS TO THE EXISTING STATE OF AFFAIRS. AA.
