Description
Summary:To assess the factor structure of religious beliefs & att's, this study uses 2 mail surveys, one of clergymen of 11 denominations & the 2nd of U professors. The dimensions measured were fundamentalism, altruism, mysticism, superstition, theism, church orientation, ritualism, & idealism. The clergymen were found to have a more diff'iated factor structure than the professors. These findings are seen to offer support for the explanation that religious "insiders" make more subtle & sophisticated clusterings or groupings of these att's than religious "outsiders." It was also found that in the professor sample, or in the academic pop, there is a "secular morality," a set of beliefs regarding responsibility to one's fellow men, which is relatively detached from religious or ecclesiastical considerations. Clergymen, on the other hand, cluster the more humanitarian dimensions with certain definitely instit'al & sacred att's. Modified HA.
