Summary: | For the past thirty years, Colombia has been governed under a limited democracy, but it has experienced chronic political & social violence &, more recently, the emergence of powerful guerrilla organizations. The relations between limited democracy & violence are explored in an attempt to determine how far the contemporary guerrilla movement reflects the crisis of the democratic system. It is suggested that there was a turning point about 1980: with the emergence of the new generation & the SE crisis, a real revolutionary movement may be forming, which for the first time would unite social demands, political strategies, & armed force. However, the situation is unstable, & regression to traditional forms of violence is possible. Modified HA |
