Description
Summary:A study based on the analysis of responses of 164 members of the Greater Pittsburgh Board of Realtors to a mail survey conducted by the Pittsburgh Commission on HR in 1965. The study explored the relations between realtors' exposure to Negro clients, experience with Negro clients & att's toward open occupancy, is, a housing market free of any discrimination. Exposure was measured by answers to questions pertaining, among others, to business done with prospective Negro clients over the past 5 yrs. Experience was measured by questions as to whether the R had rented, sold or shown housing to Negroes over the past 5 yrs. Att's were measured by questions as to whether the R favored housing laws, the concept of non-discriminatory housing, an affirmative program to that effect by the Realtors' Board, & self-regulation of housing. It was found that exposure positively influences open housing experience & open housing att's, the latter less than the former. Exposure & experience combined have an effect on att's, experience having a stronger effect than exposure. The most positive att's are associated with optimum contact, ie, doing business in an area where there are strong fair housing laws & a large nonwhite minority, combined with actual experience of selling or renting houses to Negroes. On the other hand, a very Strong negative attitude affects experience, even where there is exposure. Nevertheless, it may be hyp'ed that strong exposure will facilitate positive experience, which will in turn break down a strong negative att. A. Peskin.
