Description
Summary:An analytical inventory of the student press at Portuguese U's during the period 1945-1967. Quantitative indicators are used in a statistical treatment to determine some basic aspects of the composition & evolution of the student press & a sociol'al interpretation of the results is given. A 5-category typology was used: newsletter, bulletin, journal, review, quarterly. The distribution was studied on the basis of graphic quality (print, stencil, offset). The publications were also divided into those published by student assoc's or other associative bodies, those published by other student bodies, & 'other' publications, & into sci'fic &/or technical vs informative & cultural publications. Statistics were analyzed by category, as a whole, & by length of time of the publication's existence & regularity of publication. Finally, the difficulties & the fragmentary nature of the student press are discussed in the context of the position of the students vs the educ'al instit. It is concluded that the student pop of Portugal must change from an agglomeration of dispersed & dissenting groups & scholarly cadres with a passive attitude toward the educ'al org into a constitutive group actively interested in the general problems & methods of the U. 12 Tables, 6 Graphs. Appendix: list of publications studied. M. Maxfield.
