Summary: | This exploratory project examined how married couples adjusted to income loss. Twenty respondents from two predominantly rural counties were referred to the study by a retraining agency. Two-hour qualitative interviews were held with each participant and were content analyzed. Five features of underemployment were identified: interpretation of the situation, personal resources, health and stress, marital relationship, and family and social support. All features except personal resources were related to the strength of the marital relationship. From this material, strategies for building on the strengths and skills of the underemployed were presented. |
