Description
Summary:The res in the 1960's suggests that some situational variables, eg, fam size & affective variables, eg, order need, that influence the management practices of homemakers are being identified. As M. Burk has pointed out in 'An Integrated Approach to Consumer Behavior,' Journal of Home Economics, 1967, 59, Mar, 155-162, the increasing complexity of fam & consumer problems demands greater knowledge of the interrelationships of the SE, psychol'al & physiological factors affecting behavior. While still highly tentative, res has begun to suggest some of these relationships. If valid normative models of fam management are to develop, future studies should explain variations in management practices & the influence of them on fam well-being. This will depend on its emphasizing the interaction of the homemaker's multiple roles as influenced by the roles of other fam members. Sophistication in res design, & realism in conceptual frameworks adding coherence, unity, & validity to fam management res, shape the possibilities of increased COMM & cooperative efforts with other fam sci'ts. Such developments appear hopeful for moving fam econ's & management res from the level of description to recognition that fam well-being is a function of its members' performance in instrumental & expressive roles identifiable by internal & external constraints.
