Description
Summary:The Conclusion of SA 0410/F4698. The script of a TV program (Third Program) on 'Prisoners of Prejudice-Our Old Folks' is presented. Old age res is discussed, statistics on the aging pop are given, & some characteristics & concerns of the old are examined. The program was part of a whole series, 'Understanding Ourselves And Our Neighbors' presented by the Sch of Soc Work, Richmond Professional Instit of the Coll of William & Mary & the Va Office of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. The script of a subsequent TV program entitled 'The Summing Up' is presented next, & it analyzes the previous 3 programs. In the 1st of these programs, it was shown how innocently one's own feelings, notions, prejudice, & pre-judgments are being broadened to a chain of narrations when one re-tells an event or describes a situation in which someone, but not the individual narrator, was involved. The 2nd program illustrated the prejudices held against women not only by men but by other women. The 3rd program showed prejudice against the old. Some general reflections on prejudice are offered with the conclusion that 'we have prejudices, & those prejudices may be kept, provided they do not infringe on others.' It is pointed out that in all 4 broadcasts there were certain key phrases to give a coherent & consistent pattern to the series. The usefulness of educ'al efforts over the MM is noted, esp re new knowledge from the soc & behavioral sci's. However, choices will have to be made & a hierarchy of values established, depending upon the system, closed or open, operating in a specific society. M. Maxfield.
