Summary: | This paper provides definitions for the three main non-governmental organizations active in the development process (NGDOs, GROs, and IDCIs) and the relationships that exist among the three. In the main, these relationships are conditioned by the contexts in which the groups operate and interact, the institutional frameworks, and the projects they undertake. Three types of relationship between NGDO and IDCI are identified: NGDO as recipient, NGDO as intermediary, NGDO as one of three equal partners in the development cooperation process. In future, development needs to move beyond projects: to contribute to democratization processes and to emphasize development education. A future agenda should address some of the following issues: developing alternative forms of evaluation, ensuring institutional continuity, engaging in greater research efforts, securing financial resources, and promoting networking among GROs NGDOs, and IDCIs. |
