Summary:This note describes a quantitative method for evaluating the number of categories used in individual items in data collection instruments. A measure of the proportion of information retained using alternative response formats is presented. This measure can be used with pretest data to detect and delete superfluous response categories. The method is demonstrated using widely available computer software.
