Summary: | Parents' work in caring for children is examined; "work" is broadly defined as all the activities involved, not only in providing for children's material needs, but also in participating in their education & recreation. The impact of certain developments in West Germany since 1950 that have influenced parenting is investigated, drawing on various studies, as well as publications addressed to parents. The relationship between work & love in caring for children is discussed. Developments in three specific areas are examined: (1) families' living conditions, household technology, & changes in housework; (2) educational theories & concepts of ideal child care; & (3) women's roles & place in society. Findings indicate that whereas some aspects of day-to-day child care have become much less of a burden, new areas of stress in parenting work have emerged. 1 Table, 3 Graphs, 76 References.
