Summary: | The use of Spanish in Miami, Fla, is examined, focusing on its spread & maintenance beyond the Hispanic community. The data, drawn from journalistic coverage over a period of several years, reveal that, in perhaps unprecedented fashion in the US, the Cuban immigrant population of Miami has successfully resisted anglicization long enough to establish a linguistic alternative to the surrounding dominant culture. Still, as the assimilatory force is pervasive & the values & ideologies of the Spanish-speaking minority are not very far from those of mainstream US society, it is not clear whether future generations will eventually succumb to lang shift. 1 Table, 57 References.
