Summary: | Georgii Valentinovich Plekhanov, often described as the father of Russian Marxism, perceived profound differences between the earlier evolution of Western European & Russian societies, but he believed that the differences had greatly narrowed by the 1880s. Consequently, he was unprepared for events of the revolution of 1905. Others responded more or less creatively to the revolution, while Plekhanov's use of the comparative method failed him at this critical juncture, foreshadowing his impotence in 1917. 15 References.
