Description
Summary:This report presents a historical overview of the development of the professions. It is concerned with how professionals, through their associations, gain and maintain autonomy and power. The authors take the position that one of the primary vehicles used to create and enhance professional power is the legal system. They examine a variety of related topics: definitions of professionals and professional associations; the functions of professional associations in society; the integration of professional associations in society; and licensing and self-regulation as protective devices. The authors link these topics by documenting the privileged position of the professions within the legal system.
