Summary: | A review essay on L. Dee Fink's The First Year of College Teaching (San Francisco, Calif: Jossey-Bass, 1984); Zelda F. Gamson & Associates' Liberating Education (San Franciso, Calif: Jossey-Bass, 1984); Joseph Lowman's Mastering the Techniques of Teaching (San Francisco, Calif: Jossey-Bass, 1984); & Peter Seldin's Changing Practices in Faculty Evaluation (San Franciso, Calif: Jossey-Bass, 1984 [see listings in IRPS No. 33]). Different approaches to the problem of what constitutes superior Coll teaching are described. The skills involved -- eg, speaking ability, interpersonal ability, etc -- are fairly generally agreed upon. It is concluded that providing a supportive environment that values good teaching is crucial to the improvement of postsecondary education. 4 References. S. McAneny |
