Description
Summary:Investigations into speech accommodation have generally focused on the reasons for or the results of accommodation, & have been based on the assumption that appropriate convergence or divergence has occurred. Discussed here are situations in which speakers clearly wish to converge, but where the accommodation strategies are inappropriate, with effects on the addressees varying from zero to negative. A desire to converge is obviously connected with a concept of what one desires to converge toward. The actual convergence attempt, however, may or may not be on a linear axis in the direction of the addressee's actual speech pattern. Particular situations in which inappropriate accommodation strategies are likely to occur are interaction between native & nativized varieties of a lang; native speakers of a language & immigrants acquiring the lang, & speakers of different SCs or age groups within a native variety of a lang. 2 Tables, 2 Figures, 28 References.
