Description
Summary:Middleman minority theory has been proposed as one explanation of anti-Semitism. This theory is adapted to an examination of the occupational structure of US Jews, drawing on Edna Bonacich's "sojourner" hypothesis (see SA 22:3/G8572) & the "permanent stranger" theory of Georg Simmel (Wolff, Kurt [Ed & Tr], The Sociology of Georg Simmel, Glencoe, Ill: Free Press, 1950). The theory is particularly useful for understanding economic forms of anti-Semitism; it can serve as a basis for analyzing discrimination not only against Jews but other minority groups. 2 Figures.
