Summary: | The relationship of adolescent self-esteem to the family & school social environments is explored, utilizing scales developed by R. H. Moos & B. S. Moos (Family Environment Scale Manual, Palo Alto, Calif: Consulting Psychologists Press, 1981) & by R. H. Moos & E. J. Trickett (Classroom Environment Scale Manual, Palo Alto, Calif: Consulting Psychologists Press, 1974), & S. Coopersmith's Self-Esteem Inventory (The Antecedents of Self-Esteem, San Francisco: Freeman, 1967), for a sample of 713 Chinese grade 10 students in 9 Hong Kong public high schools. Some significant correlations were found between self-esteem & both environment measures, with family environment explaining 29% of variance in self-esteem & school environment 7%. These findings support a social-ecological perspective on the development of self-esteem. 4 Tables, 38 References. W. H. Stoddard |
