THE MOST NAIVE HOPE IN THE DETERMINED OPPOSITION OF SUBJECT PEOPLES WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER GUIDE TO DEVELOPMENTS IN POLAND THAN ANY SOPHISTICATED, GENERAL ACCOUNT OF THE POSSIBILITIES OF POPULAR POLITICAL ACTION IN EASTERN EUROPE WRITTEN BEFORE 1980.
