Summary: | A review essay on Martin Carnoy's The State and Political Theory (Princeton: Princeton U Press, 1984 [see listing in IRPS No. 28]). Carnoy seeks to review & clarify the main existing theories of the state developed recently within Marxism. His presentation of them is admirably clear & fair minded. The book's main fault is a lack of dynamism, derived perhaps from insufficient attention to the strategic problem of social transformation, which leaves the work somewhat unfocused. Despite this, it makes the "state of the art" in Marxist state theory readily accessible, a useful service. W. H. Stoddard. |
