Description
Summary:One hundred and forty-seven primigravidas completed a questionnaire examining the influence of individuals and organizations in their decision to breastfeed or bottle feed. Breastfeeding women were significantly older, more highly educated and more frequently married than bottlefeeding women. Breastfeeding women were more often influenced to breastfeed by the infant's father, female relatives, friends who themselves had breastfed, friends who offered encouragement, and organizations such as La Leche League than were bottle feeding women. Neither feeding group was significantly influenced by medical personnel. The breastfeeding primigravidas later completed a second questionnaire examining influences on the duration of breastfeeding. Paternal influence was very strong for all durations of breastfeeding. Fathers who were supportive of breastfeeding helped more often with child care tasks; paternal help, however, was not associated with a longer duration of breastfeeding. The influence of family, friends, medical personnel or organizations was not influential on the duration of breastfeeding.
