Description
Summary:The concept of a social group is examined from a social interaction point of view. A definition of social group is proposed which can be operationalized. This definition is based on the idea that social groups are characterized by regions of dense interactions ties, and by internal structure of a hierarchiral nature. This definition gives rise to an algorithm which is then tested on Sampson's monastery data. The results are compared with Sampson's ethnographic account.
