Summary: | An overview of numerous issues dealing with race, crime, & criminological research. Official data substantiate the overrepresentation of blacks & other minorities in counts of crime & delinquency. These data plus media coverage portray the problem of crime in the US as a black problem & the increasingly punitive stance in crime control falls most heavily on minority groups. This perspective is reinforced in much of the current theory & research in criminology. Three areas in which research efforts may produce unintended consequences are identified: the focus (& subsequent funding) of research, the methodological techniques used in collecting & analyzing data, & the application of research findings. Recommendations for future research in the area of race & crime are offered. AA. |
