Summary:The social sciences in Bangladesh have reflected and responded to many of the economic, social and political needs of the country over the past two decades. This paper explores the relationships between social and political history of the country and the growth of the social sciences, especially development anthropology. In addition, the research activities of a group of anthropologists from Southern Methodist University are examined as related to the social sciences in Bangladesh in recent years.
