Description
Summary:Few studies of military intervention have examined regional patterns of conflict. This study focuses on sub-Saharan Africa and examines the linkages between sub-system politics and the use of force. Included is a list of military interventions from 1960-84. The data suggest that, in this region, military interventions are undertaken mainly and increasingly by the militarily strongest states, and that African states frequently and increasingly strike against those perceived to be harboring dissidents or supporting subversion. Approximately 39% of the hostile interventions have been disputes over territory/borders. The study suggests that if one wishes to reduce the level of armed international intervention in this sub-system, it would be worthwhile to promote arms control and seek peaceful resolution of border disputes.
