description An adaptation of a plenary address presented at the 27th World Congress of the International Instit of Sociology, held 5 Sept 1984, in Seattle, Wash, calls for political disarmament, after which military disarmament will follow. It is argued that the present maintenance of world peace rests too precariously on the ability or willingness of the major powers to communicate with each other. The Great October Revolution of 1917 in the USSR is analyzed, with focus on how the communist ideologies of Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels & the political messianism of the Jacobians were applied by V. I. Lenin & Joseph Stalin. The communists' belief in the ultimate superiority of their political system is compared with the belief of Western capitalists that theirs is the only system dedicated to the preservation of world peace. It is argued that the sociological study of the relationship between the matrix & social forms & between goals & practice can be valuable in increasing the awareness & sense of responsibility of decisionmakers.
