Summary: | Colin Norman's discussion of basic science policy in the Reagan administration ("News and Comment," Science, 1984, 225, 4666, 21 Sept) suggests that support for research will be substantially the same as it was during the Carter administration. This suggestion is misleading: there have been substantial cuts in budgets for the social & behavioral sciences; & attempts to increase support in these areas have resulted in less support than was available in 1980. The negative impact of this withdrawal of support on the profession & on its applications to social policy is assessed. D. Dunseath. |
