Description
Summary:A procedure to use in evaluating standard tests for ethnic bias has been developed by J. Scheuneman ("A Method for Assessing Bias in Test Items," Journal of Educational Measurement, 1979, 16, 143-152). Scheuneman's chi-square statistical method is tested, using her data, as are its implications for alternative methods. Six methods are analyzed, with focus on I = 2 ethnic groups to facilitate the use of pairwise comparisons. While three of the methods would probably be adequate for most evaluations of test items, most have certain advantages & could be used in combination. It is argued that a statistical hypothetical testing framework be a first step in testing item bias, although Scheuneman has found this unnecessary. 2 Tables, 1 Figure, 20 References. Modified HA.
