Description
Summary:Results of 4 research projects studying Catholic parishes in the Netherlands are presented. To investigate participation in the 3 initial sacraments (baptism, first communion, & confirmation) priests from 3 parishes were interviewed (N = 128, 119, & 117, respectively), & Catholic parents who had their children baptized (N = 501 couples) provided questionnaire data on their motivations. Findings are analyzed using Leo Spruit's theoretical models of pastoral practice (see abstract in this section). Only 2 of these models -- the popular church & the church as service institution -- are found applicable, & even these are not clearly delineated. In conclusion, a typology of 4 types of parish or religious community is presented, which is closer to empirical reality & indicates the possibilities of transition from one type to another. 10 Tables, 9 References.
