Summary:Two contemporary versions of the powerful sociological idea that social structure may be inconsistent in the demands it imposes on or the expectations it generates in interacting persons, ie, status inconsistency & role conflict, are explored, with focus on the consequences of such inconsistencies. After reviewing separately the early theory & research connected with status inconsistency & role conflict, the critical reaction to early work, & recent theorizing & research, the relationship of the two concepts is examined & their future explored. Research on status inconsistency & role conflict could each benefit by mutual awareness, & by taking into account principles & findings evolving out of the other research tradition. AA.
