Summary: | An address delivered in memory of Kurt Lewin, reprinted from the Journal of Social Issues, (1951, Supplement 5). To illustrate examples of social process in real life situations, summaries of research completed in 5 military & industrial situations are presented: regimental nomination in the British Army in 1942; a contrastive analysis of 2 coal-mining systems; management reorganization in a metal processing company; employment fluctuations in an industrial enterprise; & a study of industrial labor turnover & group stability. Emphasis is given to the social category of participation, defined as "taking a role in a social system." Full participation presupposes both the offer of a role & the liberty to choose an acceptable role, which must be sanctioned from above, below, & within the individual group. It is likely that institutions with a hierarchic management structure will require both an executive system to exercise sanctioned authority as well as mechanisms through which such authority can be sanctioned. 2 Tables, 4 Figures, 2 Graphs, 11 References.
