Summary: | The autonomous efforts of urban poor households (N = 700) in constructing their own shelters in metropolitan Lagos, Nigeria, are studied, drawing on data from strategic informants, a structured observation checklist, structured & unstructured interviews, documentary analyses, & life histories gathered in 1984/85. Described are the settlements' social & economic conditions, land use, access & tenure, shelter conditions, building materials, expertise, & services, as well as the relationship between settlement residents & state & local authorities. This information could be valuable to public housing program efforts; the major lesson, however, is that shelter must be provided as the alternative to homelessness. 7 Tables, 1 Figure. C. Grindle |
