Description
Summary:Major transitions in the development of cultural systems in the Western world are traced to the rapid industrialization that occurred between the late eighteenth & late nineteenth centuries &, more recently, to the rate of turnover & volume of commodities available in diverse markets, particularly in the past twenty years. It is suggested that current conflicts concerning art revolve around definitions of artistic property & aesthetic propriety. Theoretical bases of the argument are defined, & the progression of Western ideological constructs applied to art works is traced & found to parallel changes in cultural rights associated with the ownership of works of art. 77 References.
