Description
Summary:Existing work that has employed a political economy perspective in the study of capitalist agriculture is examined, with an eye toward exposing areas needing additional theoretical & empirical investigation. Emphasis is on research in GB, which until the 1970s had focused on purely economic or sociostructural aspects of the family farm & Ru community, neglecting the larger macroeconomic & political forces that were transforming agricultural production. In the political economy approach, utilized since the 1980s, significant weaknesses are yet apparent; a framework is developed around which some of these could be remedied. Further research must take into consideration: (1) the effect of uneven development on agriculture, (2) historical & local geographical specificity, (3) a revised conception of the family farm under capitalism, & (4) how state policies & interventions affect agricultural production at all levels of analysis. 79 References.
