Summary: | A review essay on 13 books on men, representing responses to feminism & addressing issues of power & gendering in contemporary culture. Two approaches to theorizing masculinity are identified: one examines the gender of theory, focusing on specific theoretical works that double as covert mediations on gender; the other develops theories of gender using traditional tools of social theory. The books reviewed focus on such topics as: the postbellum world of leisure activities for men & women; poststructuralist language & feminist politics in relation to the writings of Thomas Hobbes; parables of male development in the Grimm fairy tales; the culture of little boys; & cross-cultural commonalities in men's need to demonstrate manhood. It is suggested that feminism has much to contribute to the current surge of interest in the lives of men, & that feminist scholarship must continue to bring to light the ways in which power & gender are linked. 7 References.
