Summary: | Richard Hofstadter's thesis (1965) about the "paranoid style" of US politics, the persistence of which he relates to ethnic tensions, is shown to be present in Canadia history as well. An examination of various instances of hostility toward French-Canadians, Hutterites, & Jews in Alberta, 1945-1950, raises pertinent questions about the nature of prejudice in the providences, including: (1) why hostility toward French-Canadians has demonstrated stronger traces of religious rivalry & prejudice than hostility toward the Hutterites & the Jews; (2) how the relationship between religious fundamentalism & anti-Semitism has developed; (3) why hostilities toward all three groups continue; & (4) what role populism has played in Alberta.
