Summary:This article is divided into three sections. The first seeks to describe and evaluate the situation of the Cuban family and Cuban women during the colonial and republican periods. It focuses on those internal processes within Cuban society which gave shape and form to the family and prescribed the roles to be played by women (and men) in both the society at large and in the family. The second section examines the impact of the 1959 revolution on the traditional family structure and the new challenges for women in the building of a socialist society. The wider context of the United States' economic and political hostility to the revolution is taken for granted here. The final section of the article addresses some of the theoretical issues involved in the debate over socialism and feminism, and the extent to which the Cuban experience can contribute to a fuller understanding of those issues.
