Description
Summary:The minority language situations of Puerto Rican Spanish speakers in the US & French speakers in Canada are compared in a comment on John Edwards's "Ethnolinguistic Pluralism and Its Discontents: A Canadian Study, and Some General Observations" (abstracted in this section, 9503641). It is contended that ethnolinguistic diversity is not the sole cause of recent political upheavals in Canada. Issues surrounding the role of intellectuals, nationalism, & separatism are addressed, & it is suggested that the organizations of people around language & identity reflects feelings of disintegration. Implications for Puerto Ricans in the US & on the island are considered. 14 References. M. Castillo
