Description
Summary:The conversations of 66 mother-child dyads concerning the children's experiences during a typical day at preschool were examined in order to investigate the following: the tendency of mothers and their 4-year-old children to refer to the children's interpersonal relationships in discussions of their preschool experiences; the categories of interpersonal relationships discussed by mother-child dyads; a comparison of dyads' discussions of relationships as a function of culture and socioeconomic status (SES) of dyad and gender of child; and the elaborateness with which the dyads discussed the interpersonal relationships. Results indicated that children's relationships with others were an integral part of dyads' conversations. The specific types of relationships discussed and the elaborateness with which they were discussed varied as a function of the type of interpersonal relation (child-peer vs. child-teacher), the gender of the child, and the SES of the dyad.
