Summary: | Population growth is outstripping the capacity of the Earth's food systems to support its inhabitants. The inevitable result will be increasing environmental degradation & lowering of living standards. Policy aimed at population stabilization is the only sensible option to ensure continued human welfare. Such policy must include several basic elements: (1) recognition of the basic right to control fertility & the benefits of family planning; (2) assessment of food-carrying capacity & its integration into policy parameters; (3) public education regarding the benefits of planning for small families; (4) provision of more accessible family planning; & (5) adoption of measures such as literacy improvement programs to combat the causes of high fertility. 5 References.
