Description
Summary:Public & private hospitals & certain psychiatric units in general US hospitals are currently exempt from Medicare's Prospective Payment System (PPS). As the current PPS weights for psychiatic DRGs (diagnostic related groups) do not reflect the costs of these exempt hospitals or units, new weights are required for these providers to be brought under PPS. Here, DRG weights for psychiatric illness for each type of exempt facility are analyzed using 1985 Medicare hospital discharge records. It is concluded that private psychiatric hospitals would fare better with charge-based weights, while public facilities would do better financially with cost-based weights. 4 Tables, 4 References. HA
