Summary: | Given the continuing tensions centering around Canada's social & political transformations, a renewed citizenship education is proposed for the construction of a flexible citizenship in a postmodern multinational & polytechnic society characterized by multiple identities, mobility, openness & diversity, & social participation as complementary to work, thus redefining the very basis of citizenship. Current conceptions of citizenship education are explored in terms of civil & civic education, human rights, democratic education, social participation & production, & dualistic conceptions. Four interwoven principles for a process pedagogy of social participation & identity formation are considered: the cohesion of human rights & democratic responsibilities; the respect & acceptance of diversity; the dialectic & participatory basis of collective identity formation; & the development of cultural consciousness & competence. 39 References.
